Typically, if the child or teen you care about answers "Yes" to any one of the questions below, they may have a substance abuse problem. If they answer yes to three or more questions, they may be at risk for becoming addicted.

Have you missed school (or work) due to substance use?
Have you ever drank or used drugs before going to a party or club?
Have you ever felt guilty or ashamed after drinking or using drugs?
Do you hang out with a crowd that drinks or uses drugs a lot?
Do you feel more able to talk to other people, especially people you don't know well, after a drink or drug use?
Do you have any drugs hidden in your room at home, or a stash hidden someplace else or held for you by a friend?
Do you drink or use drugs until your supply is gone?
Have you ever gotten into trouble at school or work due to drug/alcohol use?
Do you feel a sense of power when drinking or using drugs?
Have you ever had a "hang-over" due to drinking or drug use?
Has there ever been someone in your family with a drinking or drug use problem?
Do you get withdrawal symptoms when you stop drinking or using drugs?
Do you drink or use drugs when you are feeling depressed?
