Meet Maxine

Maxine grew up watching her mother being physically abused by her father. At age six she was the one being abused nightly by her father. At age 13 she went to go live with her maternal grandmother in Brooklyn, but after a verbal argument her grandmother threw her out onto the streets. She eventually got an apartment with her mother in the Bronx. At age 16 she became pregnant, dropped out of high school and as a result she was told to leave her mother’s house.

Maxine went to live with her boyfriend’s family, however after the baby was born the baby’s father started physically abusing her. At this point she asked her mother if she could go live with her; her mother said No! With no where to turn she came to Covenant House. Through the Regional Training Center, she obtained an entry-level position with a law firm as a Data Entry Clerk. Her daughter began receiving Early Intervention Services at the Infant Toddler Center. Six months after coming to Rights of Passage she earned her GED and as a result was given a promotion at work as well as a salary increase. She is an extremely loving and caring mother who often baby-sits two to three other children in addition to her daughter. Her daughter recently received an award for the best behaved toddler at the Infant Toddler Day Care Center graduation. Maxine has found an apartment in the Bronx and will be moving out at the end of the month.
